Q. A force F acting on an object varies with distance x as shown here. The force is in N and x in m. The work done by the force in moving the object from x = 0 to x = 6 m

Aipmt /Neet 2005 | WPE Q 1 | Graph between force v/s distance is given , from which we can understand , the force is variable.

When Force is variable (either magnitude or direction) :
If the force applied on a body is changing its direction or magnitude or both , the force is said to be variable.
dW = Sd·F
r r
Þ W = ò r Sd·F r ( F r cannot come out of integral since it is varying) = Area under force v/s distance curve.

Calculation of area can be done in two steps . In first step we can calculate the area of rectangle from X = 0 to X = 3 m and in other step we can calculate the area of triangle ( Right Angled triangle ) from X = 3 m to X = 6 m .

Its an easy qus with simple calculation.
