Q. A vertical spring with force constant k is fixed on a table. A ball of mass m at a height h above the free upper end of the spring falls vertically on the spring so that the spring is compressed by a distance d. The net work done in the process is

AIPMT/NEET 2007 | W.P.E Q 1 | First of all we need to think about the forces involved in this qus. Which are gravity and spring force . No non-conservative force is present. If we consider position at height  ‘ h ‘ from natural length level of spring as initial and depth ‘ d ‘ as final then we can apply work energy theorem . Change in an object’s kinetic energy is equal to the net work done on the object. There will be no Work done by external and non-conservative forces so net work done i.e change in kinetic energy will be equal to sum of work done by gravity and spring.
