Force F on a particle moving in a straight line varies with distance d as shown in figure. The work done on the particle during its displacement of 12 m is (a) 18 J (b) 21 J (c) 26 J (d) 13J

AIPMT/NEET 2011 | W.P.E Q 3 | We had seen same qus in year 2005 so once again I advice you all please try to solve old Neet qus and if you are still not following my channel then please like , share and subscribe right now. Graph between force v/s distance is given , from which we can understand , the force is variable.

When Force is variable (either magnitude or direction) :
If the force applied on a body is changing its direction or magnitude or both , the force is said to be variable.
dW = Sd·F
r r
Þ W = ò r Sd·F r ( F r cannot come out of integral since it is varying) = Area under force v/s distance curve.

Calculation of area can be done in two steps . In first step we can calculate the area of rectangle from X = 0 to X = 6 m and in other step we can calculate the area of triangle ( Right Angled triangle ) from X = 6 m to X = 12 m .

Its an easy qus with simple calculation. Only thing that we need to care is from x = 0 to x = 3 m , force is zero so no work will be done in that part.
